Salary and Benefits
It depends on work experience, sense of responsibility, educational background, maturity of the prospective nanny and your job requirements. The following are some general weekly wage guidelines assuming a 45-50 hour work week and one or two children.
Full Time Nannies:
Live-out $10 – $20 / per hour
Live-in $400 -$800 / per week
Part Time Nannies:
These positions are mostly live-out and paid on an hourly basis. Hourly rates start at $12 per hour and are as high as $20 per hour.
Nanny Compensation and Benefits
The nanny will typically expect to be paid either every week or every other week. Families can pay the nanny in personal check, or using a payroll service. You should be prepared to pay the nanny early if you will not be home on pay day or if you and your family will be out of town on the scheduled pay date.
A nanny or domestic employee compensation package is not limited to her pay check and she may also receive the following:
- Up to two weeks paid vacation (one week is scheduled at the discretion of the family and second week is scheduled by the nanny)*
- Six or more paid Federal holidays (New Years Day, Memorial Day, July 4, Thanksgiving Day, Friday after Thanksgiving Day, Labor Day, Memorial Day, Christmas Day, Presidents Day)
- 3-5 sick days per year*
- Reimbursement for mileage if nanny is required to use personal car to transport children
- Health Insurance is huge benefit (Â typically 50% paid by the family for first year)
Note.* Vacation time, and sick time all typically accrue, or accumulate over time. Many families restrict the use of time off at the beginning of employment, generally 60 to 90 days.
Payment for days not worked. If you decide to take your family away for any reason, you are encouraged to pay your employee. Your nanny relies on her paychecks and to be without for even 3 days could be a financial hardship for her.
Some families offer their nanny an incentive payment after the first year’s employment. Bonuses reflect a family’s appreciation for the care their nanny has provided to their children and the understanding that they will not have to expend additional resources in recruiting for a new nanny. Other possible bonuses would involve a health club membership or a health insurance plan.
Reviews and the opportunity for increases in compensation provide an incentive for a nanny to continue to strive to do their best. The salary increase for a good performance will average 5% to 6% annually. The outstanding employee may merit a greater bonus in addition to an increase.

Note: Offering benefits to an employee is not required by law.
